Are You Morbid?: A Heavy Metal Podcast

3 friends discuss metal with varying degrees of seriousness

Prototype XVI - Magic(k) Metal; or, With Apologies to Ashencult

October 31st, 2017

What happens when 4 sleepy dudes attempt to talk about esoteric occult knowledge and heavy metal? the episode length gets out of control. From Thelema to Heathenry, Celtic pagan revivalists to cosmic luciferians. We talk about magick and the men who love it while our own coherance slowly drifts away. Listen as a semingly dignified and respectful discussion of occult knowledge devolves into recollections of Spongebob in-jokes from 6 years ago. Oh yeah we had a guest host.

Prototype XV - Lovecraft & Metal: A Beginner’s Guide

October 17th, 2017

Tonight, on a very special Are You Morbid? we welcome our friends from Night (Bobby & Matt) over for a a discussion of Author H.P. Lovecraft. Taking a break from our usual album by album breakdown format, we instead give an EXTREMELY brief overview of the author, and take an in depth look at his long association with Heavy Metal and his influence on our own lives. We discuss how Lovecraft's literary rediscovery corresponds to his work being integrated into heavy metal, the genres that use his work most commonly, the effectiveness of their attempts to capture the spirit of his work, and the overall use of his imagry vs. his philosophy. Asides a plenty as we also discuss Lovecraft's stories themselves, cinematic adaptations, and which public figures may be one of Nyarlathotep's thousand forms. Eventually we do get around to recomending some albums and songs for you to try, and talk about where we'd like to see Lovecraft's work taken musically in the future.

Prototype XI - Airing of Grievances & Feats of Strength

August 23rd, 2017

If this is your first episode, please note, we generally try to be a little more impartial and educational, but we're also bitter angry people and occasionally there's some spillage. So yeah, lot's of strong opinions and rage here. Start with an earlier episode if this doesn't appeal, and know we probably won't be doing this again

In what may have been our worst episode idea yet, we decided to examine 12 albums by bands we hate, or at least thought we would hate. We thought it would be a 3 hour bitch session, tried to make it an in depth examination of why we hated these bands, but it's basically a 3 hour bitch session. We talk about Insufferable fanbases, lyrical laziness, outdated humor, sleazy behavior and delusions of grandeur, plus we use the word objective 15 times and there's a somewhat coherent rant about Eastern philosophies incompatibility with one of the host's deep rooted sense of cosmic horror. We end with 3 palette cleansers from bands we love.

"Bad Albums" List in Show Notes Here:
*Not Posting here because it seems unfair to get listens based on the bands popularity when we're not being nice*

Palate Cleansers

The Meads of Asphodel - In the Name of God, Welcome to Planet Genocide EP

Warrior - Fighting for the Earth

Necrophagist - Epitaph

BONUS EPISODE: An Interview With Mary Spiro of Shadow Woods Metal Fest

August 12th, 2017

Zach & guest host Max Shoop (ex-Horde of the Eclipse, ex-The Beyond, Storm of Damnation) with an on-site interview at a Zud show with Mary Spiro, founder of the Shadow Woods, both the Metal Fest and the production company. We talk about the festival, the financial and logistical issues of setting up a show of this size, and more. Also with us are local promotor's Dustin Davis, the man behind the metal at Guido's Speakeasy and beyond, and Nick from Lokvlt promotions in Philly. We also talk about setting up and promoting shows in a small town vs a larger city, sexism in the metal scene, the problems with pay 2 play, delusional promotors and more.

Highly Recomend this epsiode to anyone looking to get into promotion and for bands that want to know what an honest promotor looks like, and how to present your music to prospective promotors. Huge thank you to Mary, Dustin, and Nick for talking to us

Our first in what will more than likely be a series of episodes celebrating the oft underappreciated contributions women haved made to heavy metal, we present 15 of our favorite albums featuring one or more female musicians. From bassists to guest vocalists, dominatrixes to anarchists, we turn the spotlight onto some certified classics, and a few controversial picks as well. We discuss the reasons behind the hate some of these women have gotten, their roles in establishing genres we know and love, and the connections to our heavy metal heroes. Plus,  a fuck you to Brian “Dickhead” Welch, The reincarnation of Beethoven revealed, connections to British royalty, iCarly, and a segment destined to push away any of our fans named Cody.

Note: Lots of hard to pronounce names and bands in this episode, full show notes on tumblr/website.
